Katy, Texas

The Barn.

One structure, one history, and a working farm still growing around it. Here is everything a couple actually needs to know before they tour it.

Washington Township, Ohio, 1856 to 1865

Taken apart in Ohio. Raised again in Katy.

The barn began life near what is now the city of Alliance, Ohio. Historic records and antique timber framing experts date it to somewhere between 1856 and 1865. It held hay and grain, and for a while it was a dairy barn.

It is the only antique timber-framed structure known to exist that uses a “double-canted queen post” roof system. That system is what lets the barn span 60 feet with no metal supports anywhere in the room, roughly 50 percent wider than other timber-framed barns, carried on 60 foot hand-hewn oak tie beams. Barns of this size are virtually unheard of.

Master timber framers, including an Amish crew, dismantled the barn piece by piece, tagged every beam and blueprinted the whole frame before it ever left Ohio. It was shipped to Katy and rebuilt on the Beckendorff family property by another Amish crew, beam for beam, against the original plan.

“It might be said that the early barn is the best example of American colonial architecture. Each old barn was born of American soil and fitted to an American landscape for specific American needs… The barns in Europe were small… but when they built an American barn, it became the symbol of a new life. From the beginning the American barn was big, like the hopes and plans for life in the New World. It was unlike anything built anywhere else. It was entirely American.”
