More Than a Venue: Life on a Working Katy Farm

Beckendorff Farms is a working farm before it's anything else, and that's what sets it apart from every other barn venue in Katy.

More Than a Venue: Life on a Working Katy Farm

It's easy to assume a barn like this exists purely to host events, especially once you've seen photos of a reception inside it. The tomato rows a short walk away tell a different story. Most wedding barns around Katy are barns that were built to be venues and nothing else. Beckendorff Farms started as a working farm in the late 1880s, and it still is one today. The wedding side came later. The farm never stopped.

Blake Beckendorff is the fourth generation to work this ground, following a line that started with cotton in the 1880s and moved through corn, peanuts and rice before landing on the vegetables he grows now. The venue exists alongside all of that, not instead of it.

36 varieties of heirloom tomatoes, and counting

Blake grows more than 36 varieties of heirloom tomatoes, along with squash, onions, zucchini, eggplant, peppers and a long list of herbs. That's a working farm in the fullest sense: real rows, real harvests, real customers, not a backdrop dressed up to look like one. That list changes some from season to season, but the sheer number of tomato varieties alone puts this operation well past a few raised beds behind the barn.

A family farm two ways

The tomatoes are the latest chapter in a longer story. Robert Beckendorff started farming this ground in the late 1880s with cotton, and later generations moved through corn, peanuts and rice before Blake landed on the vegetables he grows today. Four generations in, the crop has changed more than once. The family hasn't.

Where the tomatoes end up

A good share of what Blake grows leaves the farm and ends up on plates at real restaurants: Pearl and Vine in Katy, and Brennan's and Potente in Houston. Chefs don't put a vegetable on a Houston menu because it's convenient. They put it there because it's good, and because a farmer close by can keep supplying it. Restaurants don't keep buying from a farm that has an off year, and Beckendorff Farms has kept those relationships going long enough that regulars at Pearl and Vine, Brennan's and Potente can expect the same ground behind their dinner plate season after season. If you've had a heirloom tomato dish at any of those tables, there's a real chance it came off this same ground your reception would be held on.

The plant sale and the summer produce stand

Every year the farm holds an annual tomato plant sale, and through the summer there's a weekly produce sale open to anyone who wants to stop by. One recent Google reviewer, writing under the name kelliefromtexas, backed that up without being asked: "They have the best tomato plants in early spring and beautiful tomatoes in the summer... grab a jar of pickles too." Both events draw regulars from around Katy who show up for the tomatoes and stay for the rest of the produce table, on the same ground that will host your ceremony a few months later.

What that means on your wedding day

Book Beckendorff Farms and you're not renting a barn that happens to sit near a field. You're getting married on a property where a fourth-generation farmer is still growing food a few hundred feet from where your ceremony will happen. It shows up in the grounds, too. A wedding photographer who has shot here, Katia G Photography, described the property as offering "a variety of scenic spots for portraits, including the lake, tall trees, and open skies," on top of what she called the rustic charm of the barn itself, paired with its elegant finishes.

See it for yourself

If you want a feel for the working-farm side before you commit to a date, ask about visiting during a produce sale weekend or the annual tomato plant sale. Ask about it when you schedule your venue tour, and we can usually point you toward whichever is coming up next. It's the fastest way to understand why this venue is different from every other barn in Katy: it's a farm first.
